1) "But the pearls were accidents, and the finding of one was luck, a little pat on the back by God or the gods or both." - This quote is before Kino goes pearl diving, Steinbeck is implying that humans have no control over an accident, which later proves that all that happened isn't entirely Kino's fault. What I got from this quote is that sometimes we may not have complete control over the things that happen in our lives, like Kino's, he found the pearl out of luck or from the gods. Humans tend to want to be in complete control over everything that happens in our lives, but sometimes we just don't. We have control over how we respond to the things that happen. Kino screaming after finding the pearl triggered the whole town to find out about it, even though they probably would've sooner or later, if Kino had reacted in a more discreet manner, maybe things would turn out differently.
2)“My son will read and open the books, and my son will write and will know writing. And my son will make numbers, and these things will make us free because he will know—he will know and through him we will know. . . . This is what the pearl will do.” - Kino shows that he has complete faith in the pearl and the future it will give him and his people. He has no idea what is to come. This is Kino before his character changes, before he starts to become more aware of what the pearl is doing to him and his family. I found this quote interesting after looking back because it seems that Kino has become more mature and cautious after everything that has happened to him.3)"For his dream of the future was real and never to be destroyed, and he had said, 'I will go,' and that made a real thing too. To determine to go and to say it was to be halfway there." - I think that this quote was Steinbeck's way of showing how truly desperate Kino was for a better life, he was so hopeful that he even said that he would send his son to school, get a real wedding, even a rifle! But it is also a scary thought because what if Kino doesn't make it. What will people say about him? What will happen? The quote is thought-provoking. What I learned is that planning isn't everything, determination and motivation are part of working to your goals as well, that is why I think this quote is significant.
